The work is devoted to the study of contemporary ethnic identity of the Tatar population of Western Siberia according to the data of ethno-sociological studies and National Population census 2002 and 2010. The Relevance of research is connected with the debatable question of the ethnic identity of the Tatar population of Western Siberia, including the native Tatar population of the Tatars and immigrants. It is shown that the Tatars of the region are characterized by a multi-level character of self-identification, which is reflected in the differences between the results of census and ethnosociological studies. If in the course of the all-Russian census for the vast majority of respondents came to the fore awareness of themselves, first of all, representatives of the Tatar community, then, according to ethnosociological research, the majority of respondents attributed themselves to the Siberian Tatars.
Keywords: ethnocultural identity, Western Siberia, Tatar population, Siberian Tatars, sociological research, population census.
